Bee Gees - Live By Request (2002)

A rapturous if occasionally frustrating experience, Bee Gees: Live by Request is the video release of a program that originally aired on cable television's A&E channel. While the brothers Gibb are more than happy to shake out a few numbers from their May 2001 album, This Is Where I Came In, the centerpiece of the show is a somewhat tiresome gimmick that finds the trio taking song requests via phone from excited fans who often chew up valuable time with rambling reminiscences. Still, the pop legends are able to lay out lush, highly polished versions of "I Started a Joke," "Jive Talkin'," and "How Deep Is Your Love," while short-changing other gems from the Bee Gees catalog in a throwaway medley. A visibly thrilled audience certainly enhances the fun, but this is really a show for the group's diehard (and most patient) fans.

Bee Gees - One Night Only (1997)

In 1997, The Bee Gees were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and played their first American concert in ten years at the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas. One Night Only records that special show, in which the Brothers Gibb perform their biggest hits from the '60s to the '90s, as well as songs they wrote and produced for others (including "Guilty," "Islands in the Stream," and "Heartbreaker"). The video also includes a tribute to their late brother Andy Gibb and a new tune, "Immortality," with guest vocalist Celine Dion.

Electric Light Orchestra (ELO): Zoom Tour Live (2001)

This superlative concert video is a godsend for fans of Electric Light Orchestra. Jeff Lynne's revamped ELO is in top form, playing six new songs from Zoom (ELO's first release in 15 years) and 17 hits from the band's beloved legacy. Like the meticulous producer he is, guitarist-composer Lynne plays cordial frontman to an appreciative audience, and his re-creation of ELO's classical-rock sound is astonishing in its fidelity to the studio recordings. From the moment ELO's signature "space-ship" stage blossoms to reveal Lynne's eight-piece ensemble (including, of course, two cellists), there's not a weak song in the brisk 98-minute set.

This was not only Elvis' comeback, but also his first-ever TV special. Originally telecast December 3, 1968, the 60-minute songfest begins with Elvis offering a medley of his old hits: "Heartbreak Hotel," "Hound Dog," "All Shook Up," "Jailhouse Rock," "Love Me Tender," etc. In honor of the Yuletide season, Presley also croons "Blue Christmas." The more elaborate production numbers include "Guitar Man," "Nothingsville," "Big Boss Man," and "Trouble." Wrapping up things is the grand finale, "I Can Dream." Backing up the King is the Blossoms vocal group.

This very entertaining video compilation was Ray Manzarek's retaliation to Oliver Stone's biopic debacle which effectively portrayed Jim Morrison's downward spiral, yet basically ignored his more human side. This video at least shows that Jimbo cared about some people, and that there was a lot working in that mind of his before the drugs and the alcohol took their toll.
